HMD 2016 Dont Stand By

Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) is an annual national and global event which takes place at the end of January to commemorate the lives of those lost in the Nazi genocide of Jews and other minority group

The theme for HMD 2016 is ‘Don’t Stand By’ and will stress the need for all of us to be vigilant in the face of potential persecution and oppression of vulnerable people or communities.

2015 marks the 70th anniversary of Anne Frank in a Nazi Concentration Camp in 1945. Miep Gies did not stand by; she was one of the Dutch citizens who hid Anne Frank, her family and 4 other Jews from the Nazis in a hidden room above where Anne’s father worked. At their apartment, Miep and her husband, a member of the Dutch resistance also hid an anti-Nazi university student.

The IYSS event will take place on Thursday 26th January 2016 at the John Smith Room, Rotherham Town Hall between 17:15 and 19:00. Mayor Maggi Clark and consort will be in attendance.

In preparation for the event, we are running music, drama and dance projects on the theme of 'Don't Stand By' across Rotherham which will be performed on the day. If you would like to get involved or would like more information please contact Claire Haddon.
